What a wonderful treat...
What a wonderful treat for us Alaskan’s visiting Bakersfield and what a treat for all our friends in Alaska. Our recent visit to Bakersfield was not a joyous one to begin with, with the passing of our dear Aunt Phyllis Allison at 85 years of age, we decided it was time to go home and visit family after 30 years. Mind you, we were but children and did not know about Dewar’s 30 years ago but our family in Bakersfield has since set us straight. In Alaska, you can go to any Target, Walmart, etc. to purchase tourist swag to bring home. We were having dinner at our cousins home, Janelle and Greg Surgener, when we shared our story of not finding a thing with California on it. Of course we were the laugh of the room but Greg came quickly to my rescue with a box of Dewar’s taffy and a bowl full to try. What’s this? Specially made in Bakersfield??? We need more….much more! After a beautiful service for our Aunt, and a traditional Basque brunch (what a treat that was!) we were excited when our cousins Jim & Jeanette Pensinger (Janelle’s parents) brought us to Dewar’s. Needless to say your staff was a delight as they giggled and laughed along with us selecting our treats. Valentine’s day was around the corner and the neat candy and taffy was perfect. T-shirts, pens, we did not miss a beat. Too bad we could not bring back the ice cream, although we indulged ourselves at the time. Truly, a delight for us Alaskans.
